Resident Doctor Rota Review – General Paediatrics

A leading specialist children’s hospital engaged KBC to review its General Paediatrics resident doctor rota. The Trust sought clarity on the true staffing requirements across its junior and middle‑grade tiers due to concerns about rising costs, restricted specialty training time, and persistent rota gaps.

KBC provided a clear, strategic assessment of the department’s medical workforce needs, taking into account service pressures, training requirements, and planned changes to adjacent services such as HDU and PAOU. The review enabled the Trust to understand the underlying causes of its staffing challenges.

KBC gave the organisation a confident path forward with a phased plan to strengthen senior presence and improve daytime cover, ultimately moving towards a more efficient doctor rota. These changes supported safer, more sustainable staffing while enabling residents to gain significantly more in‑specialty training time—an important priority for both the Trust and national bodies.

Matthew of KBC worked with a number of teams in our trust to provide cross hospital options that were cost neutral but improved working conditions/patient safety and quality of training. The approach was clear, evidence based, timely and professional.” – Medical Director
